Nothing beats a pair of well tailored shorts, especially in muggy Indian summer. Muted, candy-toned, printed or degrade – a pair of well structured shorts brings out the masculinity in a man while also underscoring his boyish charm. While most Indian men are happy to wear shorts at a deli or while they pump iron at the gym but the idea of pairing shorts with a suit jacket or a blazer finds very few takers. It’s very rarely one finds a man showing up at work in a jacket-shorts combo. One can easily blame the office dress code! Honestly how many of us who work outside fashion bother dressing up to work? Most onlookers would perhaps scoff, “Bro! You forgot your trous at home or did you spell ketchup on your dress pants?”

I feel the short-suit combo is a killer ensemble – a straitlaced blazer or a formal coat worn with a Windsor knotted tie and paired with a pair of well tailored shorts either in the family of the same colour or a contrasting tone. The shorts have the power to tone down the formality of the jacket and if you have well toned legs – definitely accentuate those. Skinny shorts with a slim-fitted blazer and a tie works great for a day look.

You could either opt for a pair of twill shorts from J Crew or a pair of linen-blended shorts from Loro Piana. Raf Simon’s floral printed shorts add a fun element while Beams Plus offers a slim-fit embroidered brushed cotton shorts – ideal for a day on a beach. Some of spring summer 2014 looks feature an array of interesting suit-short ensembles – Lanvin, Raf Simons and DSquared2 – you can pick the ensemble depending on your personal style (also ensure that your legs are well-toned!). Back home last season menswear specialist designer Arjun Khanna had shown many suit jacket looks which were paired with well tailored shorts in shades like acid green and cheery blues. A slim leather belt is a nifty pick for the great finish.

Some suit-short looks:

  • Since double breasted suits are huge this fall and coming summer, combine a db cappuccino beige or an ochre suit and shorts with a denim shirt.
  • Combine a navy blazer with a striped tie and khaki shorts for the day look.
  • Floral jackets and shorts with a white round neck work great for a brunch.
  • For a night ensemble, complete a metallic grey sit and shirt combo with a nautical stripped v-neck.
